The Literacy Investigations Series

With Literacy Investigations, you can help your students develop the ability to read and learn from a range of content-rich text genres. The program uses a subset of the thematically related science books from the Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading series. By doing so, we situate literacy instruction in an organized knowledge domain that provides a natural context and purpose for authentic reading and writing.

With three instructional sessions for each book, Literacy Investigations takes a systematic and thorough approach to literacy development. Each unit includes a Literacy Investigationsteacher's guide and 18 copies of each student book. The science topic in each unit is the same as the integrated science and literacy units, but with fewer books and no hands-on science activities.

Literacy Investigations units equip teachers with the tools they need to help students develop strategies that enhance comprehension and fluency, to help students communicate effectively with both oral and written language, and to support students’ acquisition of knowledge about the world along with related conceptual vocabulary.

The literacy series and the integrated science and literacy series use the same student books (though not all of the books are part of the literacy series), but emphasize different learning goals.

The units in this series are in development and more details will be posted as they are finalized.

The Literacy Investigations units are not intended to be used in conjunction with the integrated units. Rather, this is a separate program intended for those who are not able to use the full Seeds/Roots program, but instead would like to focus on developing reading skills using content-rich texts.
